INFORMATION:
Since the last update to the Board of Aldermen in Fall 2015, staff has collected additional information about the proposed park layout.

The Recreation and Parks Commission provided recommendations that were presented at the last discussion. Staff had an opportunity to revisit and research some of the considerations provided. Attachment A recaps those recommendations and conclusions.

Staff met with the MLK Jr. garden representatives about expanding and sustaining the current garden. Attachment B is a summary of items for consideration.

Also a brief community survey was done in an effort to gather additional ideas related to commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s memory and an amenity that appeals to teens. The survey was available online, paper copies, given out through the school district, African American churches and available in English, Spanish, Karen and Burmese languages. The results of the survey can be found in Attachment C.

Based on feedback from the last meeting and updated information, staff revised the conceptual park layout found in Attachment D.
The next step is to begin the design phase of the park. We will leave the rear of the park open for now and include the wetlands, trail and several shelters. Staff will include construction phasing in the plan. Also a plaque recreating a design in Attachment C can commemorate the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This plague was created by a community (Carrboro) teen, Grace Baucom. She is also the Vice President of the Carrboro Youth Council.
