INFORMATION: At the June 23, 2020 Town Council meeting, Deborah Gibbs asked the Town Council to consider renaming the Town of Carrboro after someone other than Julian Carr. Ms. Gibbs suggested several names to the Council. Mayor Lavelle noted an additional name that she had previously suggested, that of Johnnie Carr. She was a civil rights activist, friend of Rosa Parks, organizer of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and litigant in the desegregation of Montgomery Schools as a fitting new namesake. Johnnie Carr was also born the same year as Carrboro’s original incorporation (1911).

The Town Council requested that the Truth Plaque Task Force volunteers consider the idea of renaming the Town namesake and report back to Council.

Terri Buckner and Lillie Atwater, co-chairs of the Truth Plaque Task Force, polled their membership on the matter. The members asked that before they consider the suggestion, that the decision to rename the Town, or rename the Town after a new namesake, be made by the Town Council. They asked that if the Town Council decides to move forward with one of these options, that the Task Force be able to weigh-in on the recommendation.

This item is scheduled so that the Town Council can discuss this proposal.
