INFORMATION: In May 2020, staff submitted an application for a Legacy Tree Fund Grant from the North Carolina Urban Forest Council with a Letter of Support from Mayor Lavelle. Funds from the grant will be used toward planting trees and live stakes to restore the riparian buffer of an intermittent stream in Henry "Hank" Anderson III Park.
Trees obtained through this funding source will be planted as part of a larger-scale effort to create pollinator habitat, install stormwater control measures, and provide education and outreach to Carrboro residents. In late August 2020, staff received notice that the Town was one of the successful grant recipients.
Once a Scope of Work Agreement with the North Carolina Urban Forest Council is completed, staff plan to organize and host two volunteer planting events for this project in the fall and winter of 2020-2021. Staff will submit a final report to the NC Urban Forest Council by March 31, 2021.

FISCAL & STAFF IMPACT: The total project budget is $14,972. This includes a grant from the NC Urban Forest Council for $3,948 to purchase trees and live stakes. The Town will provide a matching contribution of $4,811, which has been allocated to the climate action budget for erosion control and irrigation materials, native seed mix, and outreach materials.
